Description

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and other calls for service and assistance.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of fire and rescue apparatus and firefighting equipment.
  • Participate in firefighting activities, emergency medical services, hazardous materials incidents, fire prevention, and training activities.
  • Follow the safe and lawful direction of a superior.

SUPERVISION 

  • Receives general supervision from a Fire Captain.
  • May receive functional and technical supervision from the Engine Operator

ESSENTIAL DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Respond to fire alarms.
  • Lay and disconnect fire hose.
  • Maintain pumping apparatus.
  • Hold nozzles and direct water streams.
  • Raise and climb ladders.
  • Assist with all aspects of firefighting activities, as necessary.
  • Operate different types of fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical equipment.
  • Provide emergency medical care in medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency situations.
  • Assist in inspecting buildings and property for fire hazards, fire protective equipment efficiency, fire exit adequacy, and general compliance with fire and life safety initiatives.
  • Assist with classes and public education on fire prevention.
  • Conduct fire prevention and first aid classes for schools, churches, civic groups, and the general public.
  • Assist with the investigation of fire scenes.
  • Attend training sessions that include firefighting techniques, emergency medical care, and the proper use of all equipment and related tools.
  • Assist in maintaining assigned fire station during shift.
  • Participate in repairs and maintenance of stations, apparatus, and equipment.
  • Clean apparatus and equipment.
  • Perform general custodial duties as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: No previous experience working as a volunteer or in a career field of fire and emergency services is required.

Ability to:

  • Learn rescue methods and techniques.
  • Learn the purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, tools, and apparatus used in firefighting, rescue, and medical assistance operations.
  • Learn and act in accordance with District policies, rules, instructions, and written material in the field of firefighting.
  • Apply basic firefighting techniques and procedures.
  • Learn to operate and maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus.
  • Learn to analyze fire and emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Maintain presence of mind during emergencies.
  • Learn to operate radio equipment.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately.
  • Learn the principles, practices, and procedures of modern firefighting.
  • Learn local geography, including the location of streets, water mains, and hydrants and the district’s major fire hazards.
  • Learn the principles, practices, and procedures of handling hazardous materials.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Engage in spoken communication in English with customers, clients, and the community via phone, computer, or both individually and in groups.
  • Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Maintain effective audiovisual perception needed for communicating with others.
  • Read and write.
  • Operate assigned equipment.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Maintain physical conditions appropriate to perform assigned duties and responsibilities.

Requirements
  • Current High School Diploma or GED.
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications.
  • Courage to be Safe certification
  • Texas Class B or higher driver’s license.
  • Current TDSHS EMT-B or higher certification.
  • TCFP Basic Fire Suppression certification.
